Biological diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and micro organisms, but it also includes genetic differences within each species for example, between varieties of crops and breeds of livestock.
Fish provide 20% of animal protein to about 3 billion people over 80% of the human diet is provided by plants, loss of biodiversity threatens everyone it has been proven that biodiversity loss could expand zoonoses - diseases transmitted from animals to humans while on the other hand, if we keep biodiversity intact, it offers excellent tools to fight against pandemics liked those caused by coronavirus.
Current negative trends in biodiversity and ecosystems will undermine progress towards 80% of the assessed targets of 8 Sustainable Development Goals, three- quarters of the land -based environment and about 66% of the marine environment have been significantly altered by human actions 1 million plant and animal species are now threatened with extinction.
The Global Report officially demonstrated the responsibility of human activities in the loss of biodiversity, which amounted to 75% for terrestrial ecosystems this assessment also indicated that solutions existed and that it was not too late to act. UNESCO's intersectoral strategy for biodiversity is based on 3 pillars: restore the relationship between humans and nature and regenerating ecosystems; conserve the harmony of our ecosystems; and amplify the power of youth .
Meanwhile, United Nations Environment Programme has launched the UN Decade's Ecosystem Restoration Playbook which has practical solutions on how we can restore our planet's fragile regions which are crucial in combating climate change, marine life is threatened by pollution , climate change, overexploitation, and overfishing we go to beaches and resorts frequently leave beer bottles and plastic wastes around the area. Coral reefs and seagrass can be sustainably managed and restored to provide livelihoods to the local population, citizens and towns face rapid urbanization such that buildings and highways do not have space to accommodate trees and vegetation.
Recreation parks such as Central Parks in New York City have restored bird habitat, Urban woodland, bee- friendly plants, and urban wet lands protect against flooding, pollution and waste management. Savannahs and grasslands, found on almost all the continents of the world, are at great loss the extinction of Bisons in prairies in North America is a reminder of deliberating ecosystems, these ecosystems are threatened by soil erosion, overgrazing, and invasion by invasive plant species pastoralists and indigenous communities can help with this management.
There are various awareness campaigns run throughout the year by activities making people aware regarding the importance of protection of wildlife many NGOs are giving their best to save wildlife in India and abroad.
As a human being it is our duty to protect these innocent species and our entire wildlife and biodiversity, saving this would be better for our future generations.
As it is rightly said "protecting your flora and fauna will help you in making a difference."
